Online – Synchronous if online attendance is expected at a specific time for some or all course activities, and attendance at a specific location is not expected for any activities or exams. These courses will have the section code starting with 62.
Hybrid if the course requires attendance at a specific location and time, however 33-66% of the course is delivered online. If online attendance is expected at a specific time, it will be in place of the in person attendance. These courses will have the section code starting with 31.

This course lays the foundation for exploration of selected areas of the Jewish past that will aid students in acquiring Jewish historical literacy. Studying Jewish history as an academic discipline is not the overriding goal of this course. Rather, it is to explore Jewish memory as a sacred concept that is rooted in Torah, liturgy, calendar, peoplehood, thought and ritual. The purpose is to strengthen the students’ relationship with Jewish memory and open new ways to understand Jewish personal and collective identity as it developed over the centuries. We will then apply this understanding of Jewish memory in providing spiritual care.

The course will provide an overview to education ministry and to faith formation. It will examine the purpose, context, and content of CE and examine basic learning theory and curriculum resources. Students will also read a spiritual memoir and reflect on transformation in the Christian life. Practical skills for educational ministry will include evaluating curricula, contextual analysis of an educational site, and designing and facilitating a workshop. Intercultural challenges for CE will be discussed. Aspects of age-related ministry will include resources for children, youth and adults. In addition, education at different life stages will be studied as moments for formation of individuals and families as well as the community (baptism and confirmation). Students are encouraged to research a historical or contemporary practice of CE/formation and develop a paper on that topic. Students will read Tye, Pazmino, McClaren, Miles and Winner.

This course will engage students in the educational ministry theories and practices in relation to intercultural leadership both within and beyond the United Church of Canada (UCC). Perspectives from intercultural, critical race, decolonial, and postcolonial theories will be studied. Students will develop strategies for anti-oppressive forms of education and practice, in terms of scriptural interpretation, contextual analysis, and leadership for community empowerment.
This course will explore various theories of human development, stages of human growth, and lifespan spiritual journey in correlation to human growth, and will discuss implications for Christian Ministry. We will reflect on our own growth and journey along with theories of human growth and spiritual journey.
