Previous Years' Course Catalogues

There are four categories for course delivery:

In-Person if the course requires attendance at a specific location and time for some or all course activities. These courses will have section codes starting in 0 or 4.

Online – Asynchronous if the course has no requirement for attendance at a specific time or location for any activities or exams. These courses will have the section code starting with 61.

Online – Synchronous if online attendance is expected at a specific time for some or all course activities, and attendance at a specific location is not expected for any activities or exams. These courses will have the section code starting with 62.

Hybrid if the course requires attendance at a specific location and time, however 33-66% of the course is delivered online. If online attendance is expected at a specific time, it will be in place of the in person attendance. These courses will have the section code starting with 31.

Some courses may offer more than one delivery method please ensure that you have the correct section code when registering via ACORN. You will not be permitted to switch delivery method after the last date to add a course for the given semester.

    Through lecture, discussion, prayer and eco-praxis, course participants will develop a solid academic foundation in eco-theology, skills to analyze contemporary social and ethical issues in ecology, and an integration of theology, spirituality and practical applications including organic gardening to support the formation of Christian identity and mission in the world today.

    The Psalms

    This course pursues the dynamics of The Psalms belonging to the ancient Israelite peoples, as relayed within the Hebrew Psalter of the Old Testament. A review of the various genres that biblical scholars identify within The Psalms will aid in understanding these texts’ position within Israel’s relationship to YHWH; and provide a means by which to adjudicate any comparison of these Israelite writings to the so-called Psalms of surrounding ancient Near Eastern peoples. Other Christian and Jewish methods of analyzing the peculiarities of the Psalms’ Hebrew text will be explored, as well as any learnings that might result from encountering The Psalms via chanting, singing, cantoring, physical movement, and other creative modalities. In addition, the course attends to these ancient texts’ witness in regard to matters of creation, ecology, suitable social economic relations, and social justice.

    The Book of Psalms and the Christian Life

    This course will examine how the Psalms have been read, interpreted and proclaimed from the time of their composition through to today. Attention will be given to the questions relating to the formation of the book of Psalms, its use through history, current theological issues arising out of the Psalms and the exegesis of representative Psalms.   • Explorations in Eastern Christian Spirituality

    SMP2271HF

    This course serves as a broad survey of the ascetico-mystical theology (Spirituality) of the Eastern Churches, as represented by a multiplicity of authors and texts (using both secondary and primary texts in English translation). Through required readings, lectures, student class presentations and class discussions as well as a renection paper, summative exercise and oral exam, both ancient and modem authors will be studied in this intensive course, with a view to examining the unifying characteristics that underlie the various spiritual traditions, as well as those elements that distinguish various trends, themes, regional emphases and personal particularities of individual authors. Connections will be made to Eastern Christian doctrinal emphases where appropriate, and historical contexts will be taken into account. In addition to work done together as a group, students will have the opportunity to choose from a list of authors/texts for individual study.
