Description

This course introduces students to the history of the Christian church from the early modern period to the present day. Beginning with the Protestant and Catholic Reformations, the course will explore confessionalization in Europe, the rise of denominational identities, and the reshaping of worship, mission, and authority. It will examine Puritanism, Pietism, evangelical revivals, encounters with Enlightenment thought, and the growth of Christianity beyond Europe through colonial expansion, indigenous reception, adaptation, and resistance. Special attention will be given to the the emergence of world Christianities in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, the rise of Pentecostal and charismatic movements, and the history of the churches in the land now known as Canada.
