Description

Contexts are always shaped by numerous historical and social forces, which we come to embody in ways related to our particular social locations. In the first half of this course, we learn how to do spiritual/vocational reflection on the self-in-context. In the second half of the course, we nurture these capacities by using them in relation to one context in which we all share: colonial Canada in the wake of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). Exploring how to be vocationally responsible in light of this context, we will develop analytic skills transferable to multiple other contexts too. In-person learning is primarily experiential, rooted in a trauma-informed, decolonial, neuro-affirming approach that values diverse ways of keeping and creating knowledge.

Additional Notes

Given the shared and collaborative nature of our learning, participation in all in-person meetings is required to pass the course. If a student cannot attend a class meeting due to sickness, we will arrange an alternative assignment so that they can still meet the learning goals of the missed meeting. Various independent, asynchronous activities will also take place via the course website between meetings.

Schedule Notes

The course will meet in-person five times over the course of the term, for 6.5 hours each time (incl breaks, plus 1 hour for lunch). There will be a field trip to the former Mohawk Institute, Residential School/Woodland Cultural Centre – which will be a longer day.
