Prof. Gerard Ryan, SJ Appointed Editor of the Toronto Journal of Theology
The Board of Trustees of the Toronto School of Theology is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Gerard J. Ryan, SJ as the Editor of the Toronto Journal of Theology (TJT), effective July 1, 2026.
Dr. Ryan is Associate Professor of Political Theology at the Regis St. Michael’s Faculty of Theology, where he has taught since 2020 following a research fellowship at Trinity College Dublin. He completed his doctoral studies at the University of Oxford under the supervision of Werner G. Jeanrond and Graham Ward. His research engages political theology, recognition, and accompaniment, with a focus on the role of religion in public life and institutions.
He is the author of Mutual Accompaniment as Faith-Filled Living: Recognition of the Vulnerable Other (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022), and the forthcoming monograph, Ecological Accompaniment in an Age of Loneliness: New Landscapes in Practical Theology (Routledge, 2026). His recent work on the Loyola High School v. Quebec decision will appear in The Journal of Church and State (OUP) in September 2026. He has received two grants from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, one co-directed by Prof. John Berkman, supporting research on science in theological education and on theology, education, and climate change.
Dr. Ryan brings to this role a strong and scholarly profile, along with a deep commitment to creative theological scholarship. Building on the success of the Toronto Journal of Theology, he brings a new vision to develop its areas of strength in contemporary theology, emerging voices, and global impact.
The Toronto School of Theology extends its sincere gratitude to Dr. Ivan Khan for his distinguished service as editor. Under his leadership, the Toronto Journal of Theology has continued to flourish as a respected venue for innovative and thoughtful theological scholarship. It is now read in more than 90 countries around the world.
“Dr. Ryan is an excellent and timely choice to lead the Toronto Journal of Theology,” says TST Board Chair, Dr. Elizabeth Smyth. “He will continue the fine work of Dr. Khan and offer strong leadership, especially given his expertise in political theology and the role of religion in public life and institutions.”
