Description

This course will study the spiritual and philosophical thrusts that profoundly changed western art during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Starting with German Romanticism and through a journey of French Realism, Impressionism, Symbolism and Abstraction, the course will reveal the quest for new visual languages that could express transcendent meaning. Based on careful analysis of representative paintings within their art historical, religious and philosophical contexts, students will acquire a grasp of different approaches to the analysis of a painting and will learn how to integrate contextual layers in order to explore and contemplate their underlying spirituality.
