The Toronto School of Theology (TST) was deeply saddened to learn that Rev. Dr. C. Douglas Jay, founding Director of TST, passed away on January 1, 2021, at the age of 95. Dr. Jay was also emeritus principal of TST's member school, Emmanuel College.
Dr. Jay was a TST founder and its founding Director (1969-80). One of TST's prestigious, and highly competitive Board of Trustees scholarships, the C. Douglas Jay Scholarship, was established by the Board in 1981 in his honour, and is made possible thanks to contributions made by the Douglas and Ruth Jay Family Foundation.
On the occasion of Dr. Jay's 90th birthday, the first floor boardroom in the TST building was renamed and dedicated the C. Douglas Jay Boardroom in his honour and bears the following plaque: As the Toronto School of Theology’s first Director, with clear-sighted vision, exceptional gifts of leadership, unstinting dedication, and enormous tact, he ably shepherded this ambitious experiment in collaborative ecumenical theological education. His efforts helped ensure its success. During his term, the Toronto School of Theology was accredited by the Association of Theological Schools, and affiliated with the University of Toronto.
As noted in the Autumn 2013 edition of the Emmanuel College newsletter, Dr. Jay helped found and then direct the Toronto School of Theology because he believed in “the importance and need for ‘open and respectful dialogue in crossing the lines that divide us from persons of other faiths and cultures’. . . .” Read the newsletter article here.
The Toronto School of Theology extends our sincere condolences to Dr. Jay's family and friends. The annual ecumenical service for the TST community, during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, will be held on January 27 at 1:30 pm and will be dedicated to his life and legacy.
Dr. Jay's obituary can be read here.
A memorial service will be announced in the coming months.
