The Toronto School of Theology was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Fr. Mario D'Souza, CSB, September 26, 2017. He was a dear colleague and teacher, whose scholarship and leadership profoundly enriched our community. Fr. D'Souza was the former Dean of the Faculty of Theology, University of St. Michael's College, one of TST's seven member colleges. He was also former President and Vice Chancellor of Assumption University, Windsor, and a world leader in the field of religious education.
Fr. D’Souza began teaching at St. Michael’s Faculty of Theology in 1991, and other than his time at Assumption (January 2005 - August 2006), the Faculty remained his home until his death. He held the Basilian Fathers Chair in Religion and Education, and was named a Fellow of St. Michael’s College in October of 2014. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Theology from 2009 to 2014.
He brought to the classroom a rich academic history of his own, having received degrees from Boston College, the University of St. Michael’s College, the University of Toronto, the University of Calgary, and University College, Dublin.
An Evening Prayer was held Friday, September 29 in the Flahiff Centre Chapel, 95 St. Joseph Street, Toronto, and a Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, September 30 at St. Basil’s Church, 50 St. Joseph Street, Toronto.
A memorial Mass was celebrated on the Solemnity of All Saints, Wednesday, November 1, at 1:30 pm in the chapel in the Cardinal Flahiff Basilian Centre at 95 St. Joseph Street. Fr. George Smith, CSB, Superior of the Basilian Fathers, will be the presider and homilist.
