2018 TST Board of Trustees Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards Announced

The following TST students are the 2018 recipients of Toronto School of Theology Board of Trustees scholarships, awards and bursaries. Congratulations to all!

Donald Cameron Memorial Award

This award honours the memory of Donald Cameron, who served the Toronto School of Theology in a number of capacities over many years including Chair of the Board of Trustees and Chair of the Development Committee. Donald has a deep commitment to the wider community, and this award recognizes excellence in projects planned and completed by a student in good standing during their basic degree program, and which engaged them with the wider community beyond the Church.

Awarded to:  Ahmad (Boghos) Barbouri, MDiv student at Knox College

Gordon Farquharson Scholarship

Established in 2008 by the Board of Trustees in honour of Gordon Farquharson, who assisted in the incorporation of TST in 1965–1970, and also in the incorporation of its predecessor organization. The scholarship is made possible by a gift of the Ralph M. Barford Foundation plus matching funds from the Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS). The scholarship is awarded to a doctoral student on the basis of academic excellence.

Awarded to:  John Sampson, PhD in Theological Studies student at the University of St. Michael’s College

Margaret E. Fleck Scholarship

Established in 2006 by the Board of Trustees in honour of the Reverend Margaret E. Fleck, an Anglican priest and divinity graduate of Trinity College, and former member of the TST Board of Trustees. The award is funded by a gift of the Ralph M. Barford Foundation along with matching funds from the Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS). The scholarship is awarded for academic excellence and demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively to the broader community.

Awarded to:  Allison Murray, PhD in Theological Studies student at Emmanuel College

C. Douglas Jay Scholarship

Established by the Board of Trustees in 1981 in honour of the founding Director of TST, Professor C. Douglas Jay. The award is made possible thanks to contributions made by the Douglas and Ruth Jay Family Fund of The United Church of Canada Foundation. The award is available to a graduate degree student with excellent academic standing working in the area of Christian social ethics, philosophical theology, philosophy of religion or psychology of religion.

Awarded to:  Monica Marcelli-Chu, PhD in Theological Studies student at Regis College

The John M. Kelly Award

Established in honour of Father John Kelly, former President of the University of St. Michael College and a Board of Trustees member. This award is given to a student, who, through his or her service to the TST community, has made a significant contribution to the TST community and has achieved a strong academic record.

Awarded to:  Fiona Li, ThM student at the University of St. Michael’s College

Order of St. Lazarus Bursary

Established in 1994 through a gift from the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem. An additional gift generously made by the Order has been supplemented by matching funds from the Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS). The bursary is awarded to a graduate degree student working in the area of ecumenism.

Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF) Bursaries

Funds the portion of the Toronto School of Theology’s endowment fund built up under the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF) program is available to assist PhD, ThD and DMin students.

Esther Reiser, PhD in Theological Studies student at Emmanuel College

Marjorie Watson Powles Award

Established by the Board of Trustees in 2002 in honour of Dr. Marjorie Watson Powles to recognize her contribution to the lives and work of women active in the church. The award is available to a TST student who actively engages in community and congregational life, demonstrates academic excellence, and brings a feminist perspective to the study of theology.
