Context and Ministry

Self-awareness, understanding of difference and ability to do contextual analysis are key to the development of effective leadership skills. In this course, focused experience and reflection on selected visits, readings, lectures, and class seminars, will introduce students to the practice of reading individuals and cultural systems as living texts. The broad issues of post-modernity, plurality, inculturation, mission and positionality form the background to engage questions of otherness and the construction of individual and communal identities. Evaluation includes participation in field visits outside of class, small group discussions and a pass on three short reflection papers. 80% participation is required to successfully complete this Pass/Fail course. Successful completion of this course is required for enrollment in Contextual Education II EMF3020YY.  *Successful enrolling in this course are required to participate in the Orientation visit to Regent Park in September.  (Please dress comfortably and casually, including footwear.)  Proof of a police check is required.

Community-Based Assessment and Design

Reflecting on the biblical concept of 'shalom', students will develop the skills necessary to assess a local community. This approach is guided through the development tools of community assessment (listening to the community) and project design, monitoring and evaluation (responding with the community to a limitation). In the first semester students will attend a 2-day seminar on practical aspects of community assessment in the first semester. In the second semester students will participate in a second 2-day seminar on design, monitoring and evaluation of a project to meet a community limitation. For 20 hours each semester students will partner with a community-based organization to assist in the development of a community assessment report and a project design document. Student will be expected to write an analytical reflection paper at the end of each semester based on field-based experience and reading. Limited to students in the MTS in Development Program at Wycliffe College.

Mission Shaped Ministry

The course is a ministry-based practical orientation to the ministry of church planting and fresh expressions of church. The curriculum includes material on spiritual formation for pioneering ministry; elements of missiology, ecclesiology and cultural exegesis; and how to begin, sustain and bring to maturity a fresh expression of church. The course takes place over alternate Thursday evenings, but also includes two Saturdays and one residential weekend, for a total of 48 classroom hours. This course is a requirement in Wycliffe's new M.Div. "pioneer track". It is adapted from the course used in several seminaries in the UK as part of the Church of England's training for "Ordained Pioneer Ministries". This is in turn a part of the Fresh Expressions initiative of the Archbishops of Canterbury and York. Teaching methods: lectures, discussions, supervised placement.

This course focuses on personal contemplative prayer as essential for our relationship with God and the soil out of which healthy and effective ministry grows. The course covers Biblical teaching on prayer; the contemplative tradition arising from the early desert fathers and mothers; spirituality, theology and psychology of prayer; and various Christian traditions of prayer including lectio divina, Ignatian prayer, other forms of scripture prayer, centering prayer, Christian meditation, and the awareness examen.The course concludes with suggestions for planting and growing a prayer-based parish ministry. Lectures, small group and plenary sharing, and practicum. Two reflection papers and a final paper designing a course to be taught in a ministry seeting. The Practice of Diaconal Ministry

The practice of being an Anglican Deacon involves an understanding of Christian Ministry in its ancient and current expressions. Deacons as ordained ministers are called to focus the ministry of the whole community as this relates to the service and care of those in need. The role of deacons is to express the world to the church and the church to the world. The course will discuss the variety of ministries, social justice and the church, the liturgical role of deacons, the leadership and prophetic role of deacons in the parish/congregation, and the future growth of the diaconate. The relevance of this course to other denominations is based on the baptismal requirement of pursuing justice in the world. Songs of the Church

The course on congregational song has no prerequisites related to musical ability, keyboard skills, or to hymnic background. Attendance at lectures for the exploration of current song resources (Voices United, More Voices, and a hymn book of the student's choice) forms part of the evaluation process. In addition, weekly assignments such as book reviews or song leading, class participation, and presentation of a final integrative project will be graded. Familiarity with journals and literature in the field will be required. Some research and reports on research will be required. Demonstrated familiarity with the resources of a newly developed concordance for Voices United will be an integral component for evaluation.

Toronto School of Theology Choir

This course will require students to advance their singing and ensemble talents in a group rehearsal situation that is based on knowledge and its application, in order to achieve creative goals. The chorus director takes the role of lead interpreter and coach for the team. After cultivating reliable vocal production, diction, and notation reading skills, the choir will study repertoire drawn form twentieth century British and North American composers, using sacred texts. Styles will range from classical to jazz. Those registered for credit will be required to attend all rehearsals, and submit two short research papers, as well as a major book review. Students will be assessed on the faithfulness of attendance and team-interaction; on their growth in the vocal discipline; on three written assignments, and contribution to the summative exercise (final concert). TST Choir is open to all members of the community: students, faculty and staff.

The course intends to examine the dialogue between faith and culture in a post-modern world. It will trace the development of faith from the end of the mediaeval period to the present time  and show why the narratives of our time with regard to faith are situated in that historical context and how they affect a reading of and engagement in our world today.
From the class the students will gain
1. a knowledge of contemporary critical theory and praxis.
2. development of research skills.
3. an exposure to the main issues of contemporary faith and culture.
4. an exposure of the ways these issues are dealt with in contemporary art/film/poetry.
5. A way of appropriating their lives through interiority analysis.

Students will be encouraged to identify a research project that combines aspects of spirituality and health to present in a seminar and to develop further in a final research project. Aspects of spiritual self care for those engaged in pastoral ministry will be examined. The role of empathy and sympathy in empowering one to listen to illness narratives and to bear witness to suffering will be discussed. This foundational practicum is designed for persons desiring formation in pastoral presence and communication skills. Focus is placed on the development of a contemplative stance, compassionate listening and evocative presence for pastoral service in roles such as spiritual director, chaplain, parish minister, and for those in service within the context of everyday work life. The United Church of Canada is known as a liberal denomination that merged Methodists, Congregationalists and Presbyterians, whose histories are based in Wesleyan and Calvinist thought and practice. The 18th century Methodist tradition from which it derived became a church in community, ministering through schools, hospitals, prisons, economic cooperatives, and other institutions that served disenfranchised people in 18th century England and Ireland. This course explores how Wesleyan thought might be retrieved as a foundation for the current "church and community" priorities of the United Church of Canada: 1) Healthy and Faithful Congregations; 2) Youth and Young Adult Ministries; 3) Right Relations with First Nations; and 4) Intercultural Congregations. Developments in preaching over time will be explored particualrly with regard to changing ideas of "biblical text," hermeneutics, rhetoric, sermon forms, language theory, and homiletical "schools," and changes in emphasis on key doctrines, personal versus social, preachig for conversion versus preaching to the saved, the rise of social consciousness and its effects on preaching, and law and gospel. Presentations will include brief biographical material; homiletical setting; short sermon extracts that demonstrate some homiletical/hermeneutical principle, identification of homiletical learnings for today; and portions of sermons written for today that demonstrate a historical principle. Psychology & Religion

The course will begin with a discussion of the relationship between psychology and religion. It will then explore the relationship between religion and psychology -- history, methodology, research and application. It will review psychological theories and research on personality and their relationship to spirituality, religious behaviour, individual differences and abnormality, and review research on religious development. These findings will then be applied within the context of the social and organizational psychology of the church. Students will be asked to write several reports on assigned readings and a longer essay for the end of the term. A previous course in introductory psychology would be helpful but not essential.

Religious Peacebuilding

This course investigates the religious grounds for peacemaking today. Each student will be responsible for following and reporting on developments in one location represented by a Tanenbaum “Peacemaker-in-Action” throughout the course. Meanwhile, the evolution of the theological/ecclesial/interfaith discussion of peacemaking will be traced through the 20th century debate between pacifism and just war; conflict resolution and transformation; peacekeeping, peacemaking and peacebuilding; humanitarian aid and development; NGOs and the military. Students will be expected to explore these debates in relation to their “case study” and may write the case study from the perspective of any faith.

Practicum in Spiritual Direction

This foundational practicum is designed for persons desiring formation in pastoral presence and communication skills. Focus is placed on the development of a contemplative stance, compassionate listening and evocative presence for pastoral service in roles such as spiritual director, chaplain, parish minister, and for those in service within the context of everyday work life. This transformative process integrates topics of Ignatian discernment, prayer, spiritual growth, spirituality, justice, theological assumptions and images of God. This is a two-term, supervised, peer based practicum. Requirements and prerequisites: two year’s previous experience receiving spiritual direction, permission of the instructor, regular attendance essential; 3 10 page integration papers, final grade.

For students considering the 12 credit Diploma in Spiritual Direction, this course is the first of a four-phase Practicum, which facilitates ongoing discernment and formation for the ministry of spiritual direction.

The Christological-Trinitarian foundation of Mary's role in salvation history and in the Church is developed in two areas: 1) the foundations from Vatican II, Scripture, Church Fathers, and the four Marian Dogmas; 2) the celebration of Mary in liturgy, popular piety, and spirituality. Finally, Mary is studied in light of ecumenism, and in one contemporary theologian and twentieth-century developments for her profound significance for today.
