Wycliffe College Founders' Day Lecture

Event Details

The third Founders’ Day Memorial Lecture will be given by Dr. Thomas Power of Wycliffe College. The illustrated lecture traces the formative influences on the many Irish Anglican clergy and laity who came to Canada in the 1800s. They came with a distinctive theological outlook with an emphasis on orthodox doctrine and biblical foundations. They or their descendants formed the constituency from which many of the founders of Wycliffe College derived. Included in their number was the scholar-pastor, Rev. Frederick O’Meara, famous for his translations into Ojibwa, one of the founders of the college in 1877, whose son Rev. Thomas O’Meara was its second principal.

Thomas Power is adjunct professor of church history at Wycliffe College and its theology librarian. A graduate of Trinity College Dublin, he has published in the area of Irish Christianity, patterns of conversion to Anglicanism, and the history of theological education. His most recent book is a co-edited collection, Reformation World: Antecedents and Legacies in the Anglican Tradition.

Esther: Was She Really Immoral, Merciless, and Blood Thirsty?

Many Biblical interpreters of the book of Esther are critical of the character of Esther, noting that she is morally troubling and unbecoming. Join us as Professor Marion Taylor explores how the character development from young Jewish girl to Persian queen counters the very negative views of Esther that many people propose.

This event is FREE, though donations are welcome in support of the Wycliffe College Bursary Fund.
