William Robins, President of Victoria University, announced that the Board of Regents of Victoria University has approved the appointment of Professor Phyllis D. Airhart as Interim Principal of Emmanuel College* from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018. Professor Mark G. Toulouse, will retire from the position of Principal, June 30, 2017. Professor Airhart has twice served as Acting Principal of Emmanuel College, during the fall terms of 2008 and 2014. She has provided administrative leadership as Emmanuel's Director of Advanced Degree programs and its Master of Divinity program. Over the years she has served on numerous committees for both Emmanuel College and Victoria University, as well as the Toronto School of Theology and the Association of Theological Schools (including its Executive Council).
Professor Airhart is Professor of the History of Christianity at Emmanuel College and cross-appointed to the Department for the Study of Religion at the University of Toronto. Her research interests include North American Christianity, religion and public life, and the history of spirituality. Her most recent publication, A Church with the Soul of a Nation: Making and Remaking the United Church of Canada, received the Canadian Society for the Study of Religion's book prize in 2016, and was shortlisted for the Canada Prize in the Humanities from the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences. She is a past recipient of Victoria University's Award for Excellence in Teaching and the United Church of Canada's Davidson Trust Award for excellence in teaching and scholarship in theological education.
