The following TST students are recipients of the 2017 TST Board of Trustees scholarships, awards and bursaries. Congratulations to all!
Gordon Farquharson Scholarship
Established in 2008 by the Board of Trustees in honour of Gordon Farquharson, who assisted in the incorporation of TST in 1965–1970, and also in the incorporation of its predecessor organization. The scholarship is made possible by a gift of the Ralph M. Barford Foundation plus matching funds from the Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS). The scholarship is awarded to a doctoral student on the basis of academic excellence.
Awarded to: Samantha Cavanagh, BA, King’s College, Dalhousie University; MDiv, Emmanuel College. Samantha is currently a ThD student at Emmanuel College.
Margaret E. Fleck Scholarship
Established in 2006 by the Board of Trustees in honour of the Reverend Margaret E. Fleck, an Anglican priest and divinity graduate of Trinity College, and former member of the TST Board of Trustees. The award is funded by a gift of the Ralph M. Barford Foundation along with matching funds from the Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS). The scholarship is awarded for academic excellence and demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively to the broader community.
Awarded to: David Clark, BA (Joint Hon) and BTh (First-Class Hon), McGill University; MDiv (Distinction), The Presbyterian College, Montreal. David is a conjoint PhD in Theological Studies student at Wycliffe College.
C. Douglas Jay Scholarship
Established by the Board of Trustees in 1981 in honour of the founding Director of TST, Professor C. Douglas Jay. The award is made possible thanks to contributions made by the Douglas and Ruth Jay Family Fund of The United Church of Canada Foundation. The award is available to a graduate degree student working in the area of Christian social ethics, philosophical theology, philosophy of religion or psychology of religion.
Awarded to: Jeffrey Metcalfe, BA (Hon), Canadian Mennonite University; MDiv (Hon) Trinity College. Jeff is currently a conjoint PhD in Theological Studies student at Trinity College.
The John M. Kelly Award
Established in honour of Father John Kelly, former President of the University of St. Michael College and a Board of Trustees member. This award is given to a student, who, through his or her service to the TST community, has made a significant contribution to the TST community and has achieved a strong academic record.
Awarded to: Allison Murray, BA, Wilfrid Laurier University; MTS, Conrad Grebel University College at the University of Waterloo. Allison is a conjoint PhD in Theological Studies student at Emmanuel College.
Order of St. Lazarus Bursary
Established in 1994 through a gift from the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem. An additional gift generously made by the Order has been supplemented by matching funds from the Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS). The bursary is awarded to a graduate degree student working in the area of ecumenism.
Awarded to: Christian Stackaruk, BA in Biblical Languages, Moody Bible Institute, Chicago; MA in Historical Theology, Wheaton College, Illinois. Chris is a conjoint PhD in Theological Studies student at the University of St. Michael’s College.
Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF) Bursaries
Bursary money from the portion of TST’s endowment fund built up under the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF) program is available to PhD, ThD and DMin students.
Awarded to both: Shannon Wylie, BA in World Religions, McGill University; MA in Religious Studies, McGill University. Shannon is a conjoint PhD in Theological Studies student at the University of St. Michael’s College, and Loys de Fleuriot de la Colinière, BCom, University of Kwazulu-Natal; MTS, Knox College. Loys is currently a conjoint PhD in Theological Studies student at Knox College.
Marjorie Watson Powles Award
Established by the Board of Trustees in 2002 in honour of Dr. Marjorie Watson Powles to recognize her contribution to the lives and work of women active in the church. The award is available to a TST student who actively engages in community and congregational life, demonstrates academic excellence, and brings a feminist perspective to the study of theology.
Awarded to: Angelica Atkins, BSc in Pre-Med Biology, Liberty University, Virginia; Post-grad Diploma in Art Therapy, Kutenai Art Therapy Institute, British Columbia. Angelica is a MPS/MDiv student at Knox College.
